Skoolie, Van, & RV Internet - Digital Nomad Connectivity - Cell Signal Boosters and WiFi

Most of us get Internet on The Road by using a Cell Signal Booster (also called “RV WiFi Booster”) connected to a Mobile Hotspot. This can be a dedicated phone (used as a Hotspot) or a stand alone Mobile Hotspot Device (or “Jetpack”). - Basically, you’re boosting the local Cell Phone Signal and using that to connect to the web.

Since “unlimited” Cell Phone Plans will usually “clock down” after a certain amount of data is used, we either buy 1 or 2 extra phones on a Family Plan (each with it’s own unlimited data) and/or a Standalone Hotspot Device that comes with it’s own data package. - For added security and to stretch your data budget even further, consider downloading VPN Software to your Laptop or using a VPN Router for mobile devices. Check out our Connectivity Blog for more info.

You do get what you pay for in a Cell Signal Booster. The weBoost Products are tried and true, but there are some less expensive options. You won’t get quite the same performance, but click the images to compare.

Starlink Internet Update: While things are developing fast, as of January 2023, Starlink RV Internet is functional, but maybe not the most practical for the typical Digital Nomad. - Starlink RV Internet could be a perfectly serviceable option if you don’t game or work from The Road, if you stay in one area that happens have good coverage, or if you spend a lot of time “Deep-Boondocking” where there simply isn’t any other signal available. For many areas, however, (at least for now) you’ll get a better signal with a Cell Phone Hot Spot and a weBoost.

While much of North America and Europe are listed as “High Capacity”, and Starlink Speed is faster for residential applications, the “Starlink for RV” Product still leaves a bit to be desired. The Starlink RV Mount does allow you to move the antenna to somewhat compensate for Starlink Speeds and Latency, but a typical Starlink upload speed still falls under 5mbps in the best areas, and 0 if you’re surrounded by trees. - Current Starlink Internet Cost: Roughly $599 for equipment and $135/month for Starlink RV Internet Service. (Shown in US $. Subject to change.)

Don’t get us wrong. If you’re just starting your Build (don’t plan be on The Road for a year) or if your Digital Needs are light, (You basically “just surf” and don’t need to upload large files.) take a close look at the Starlink RV Internet product. Starlink Speed will only improve as we see more and more Elon Musk Satellites in the sky, and once fully functional, Starlink for RV should be a game changer. - Just not quite yet…

TV For RV! - Radio too!

There’s no need to miss your favorite shows on The Road, keep up with local news, or just hang out and listen to the Radio.

Go with a 12v TV to save power. Grab a WiFi Projector (screen included) for Outside Movie Nights. An RV TV Mount will save the space, and an RV TV Antenna will ease the stress on your data usage. Click the images to compare all the gear you need to make the most of Nomad Entertainment!
